LOCAL ARTIST: GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR by way of SWITZERLAND: VERONICA BAIDAL

Hello Everyone,

This time I bring you a local artist from Ecuador. Her name is Veronical Baidal and she is from the city of Guayaquil. She is a singer songwriter in a more soft style of the alternative genre. I place her between Sarah Mclachlan with Dido and a tinch of Alison Moyet by way of some latin rhythms. She wrote her first song at age 15 and decided to be a Dj at 17. For four years she made her friends dance with the best in electronica (house and techno). Veronica has always loved music and writing music. At age 19 she decided to learn how to play the guitar. She thought that the best way to express her thoughts was by writing and singing songs. In 2005 she played live in various places in Guayaquil. In 2007, she went to Zug and Luzern, Switzerland to play her music. She presently lives in Switzerland and is planning to come down to Ecuador in October to do some concerts. Today In Alternative Music History: June 28, 1997

Today in Alternative music history was the day The Verve got a major blow. Their hit “Bittersweet Symphony” sampled an orchestral version of the Rolling Stones hit, “The Last Time” created by Andrew Oldham, the Rolling Stones’ original producer. Because of this, all the song’s royalties go to the Rolling Stones’ publishing company, ABKCO, and Oldham comes after the Verve for money as well.

27 years ago today Pretenders guitarist James Honeyman-Scott dies following a period of cocaine and heroin addiction. This was a major blow to the band and leader Chrissie Hynde took it really hard.

The Sex Pistols held a party on a boat as it sailed down The River Thames in London. The Pistols performed ‘Anarchy In The UK’ outside The Houses Of Parliament resulting in members from the party being arrested when the boat docked later that day.

Today In Alternative Music History: June 15, 1989

Today in alternative music history was the day that Nirvana’s debut album ‘Bleach’ was released in the US. The title for the album came from a poster ‘Bleach Your Works’ urging drug users to bleach their needles.

GREAT LOST ALTERNATIVE BAND: HONEY SMUGGLERS

This band made an impact on the Madchester scene of the early 90s. The Honey Smugglers formed in London, England in 1988. the band consisted of

Chris Spence – Lead Vocals, Guitar
Steve Cox – Keyboards, Vocals
Ged Murphy – Bass, Vocals
Steve Dinsdale – Drums, Vocals

They made a name for themselves in the London live circuit. They signed on to Fiction Records and immediately recorded the Listen EP. The title track was a hit because of the sound it carried which was the "baggy" scene that was taking over the U.K. at that time. They toured Britain with Eat and culminated with a sold out show at the London Astoria. Despite this and also being included in the Top 50 singles of the year in 1990, Fiction dropped them. They managed to sign on to Ultimate and released the Besides Which EP in early 1991. But then they suddenly split in the middle of recording their debut album.

They briefly reformed for some live shows a few years later but did not live up to expectations.

If you get a chance to listen to this band, I highly recommend you do. One of the great lost bands in the Madchester era.

Today In Alternative Music History: June 14, 1982

The Pretenders fire bass player Pete Farndon. The reason for the firing was due to Pete having a major drug problem which prevented him to fully function with the band. He would die a year later from a drug overdose in 1983.

Sorry for such a long delay in updating this web page. The reason has been that I found myself very sick (appendix, gall bladder) and it required surgery to get myself back on track. Despues de un largo tiempo ya estoy de regreso. La razon de mi ausencia fue que estaba enfermo (apendice, vesicula) y requirio una operacion para mejorarme.
