R.E.M. HAPPENINGS! CELEBRATING THEIR 30 YEARS

As you may know tomorrow marks the 30th anniversary of the formation of R.E.M. If you're in the Athens, Georgia area, there will be some celebration things to do. Here they are.

To commemorate the 30th anniversary of R.E.M.’s first performance, the Athens Welcome Center and Classic City Tours is offering the Athens Music History Tour on Saturday and Sunday. Athens music historian Paul Butchart will lead the tour, exploring the sights and sounds that cultivated Athens’ rich musical heritage, with an emphasis on R.E.M.’s early days in Athens. Stops will include the “Murmur” trestle, the “Sidewalk of the Stars” and the Steeple, among other musical points of interest. Space is limited.

When: 12:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday

In honor of R.E.M.’s anniversary, Ciné will be showing “R.E.M. @ 30: A Video Retrospective.” This limited-run retrospective will highlight the entirety of the band’s career with rare footage and clips from performances, videos, interviews and much more. Approximately 90 minutes.

When: 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday; 7:30 p.m. Monday
