As 2009 Closes...

Well, there is only a few hours before we say goodbye to 2009. It has been quite a year with so many things happening around the world. Things that come to my mind that has happened, the economic crisis, the black outs here in Quito, the unrest of the people with the current Ecuadorian governement, reuniting with an old friend who I haven't seen in 17 years, my near death experience and subquent operation, my trip to Los Angeles and enjoying a fantastic two weeks and a half, my meeting the Trashcan Sinatras and Andy Chase of Ivy/Brookville, El Vagon Alternativo going online for the world to listen, setting up this blog for reasons of people screwing up the messageboard of El Vagon Alternativo with their negative comments and in turn this blog has been a great success with my fans from all over the world and here in Ecuador, the death of my best friend Edison Soto as a result of a robbery, this and many more too numerous to list.
I look at 2009 as a year where I made many decisions in my life in how I look at things. The decisions I made have been for the better and I feel FANTASTIC in many ways.
2010 will be a fantastic year. The web page will turn 1 year old and I will continue it for a long time. My radio show, El Vagon Alternativo, will turn 12 years old in May and will continue with the best in alternative music. There are other plans that are coming up as to regards with Edison Soto's radio show El Museo del Rock. Stay tuned for that. Plans for me to go visit Los Angeles this coming summer are in place. Concerts galore this summer. Continuing in helping the local Ecuadorian Alternative music scene. Possibly (almost sure) the first edition of the CD: The Best of El Vagon Alternativo for sale.
To my readers I would like to leave you with this thought, always live your life positively. We don't have a lease on life so live it to the fullest. Always think before you act in anything that you do and do it with RESPONSIBILITY. All of you are incredible people and whatever plans and dreams you have, I know that they will be fulfilled. Continue to pass on the word of this website and also the radio show. Have a Happy New year and please be careful when you party tonight with your friends and loved ones. See you in 2010 (hey that's tomorrow!).

Always Alternative,
Edwin

The Swedes may be warm, but they are not warm and fuzzy. This fall, authorities rounded up 3,000 wild rabbits and then burned them for fuel at a heating plant in central Sweden. Bunny-killing is an annual practice in Stockholm — it's used to combat overpopulation in the city's extensive network of parks — but the animals had never been used to heat buildings before this year. "The bodies contain a lot of fat, and fat has exactly the same energy content as normal heating oil," explained Leo Virta, chief executive of Konvex, the company handling the bunny-burning. Supporters said that since the bunnies were going to be culled anyway, using them for fuel was both economical and environmentally friendly. Unsurprisingly, Swedish animal-rights activists were not convinced.

Did you know that a pregnant woman can get pregnant again while she still has a bun in the oven? Neither did we, but apparently it's possible. Arkansas resident Julia Grovenburg knew she was pregnant, but when she got an ultrasound, her doctor announced that she was carrying two babies who were not twins. The male fetus was said to have been conceived 2½ weeks after the female fetus. Only post-delivery tests can confirm the doctor's suspicions, but if they're true, Grovenburg is experiencing what's called superfetation, an extremely rare condition in which a pregnant woman conceives again. One baby's due date is in December 2009. The other? January 2010.

Skies weren't so blue for the recession-weary airline industry in 2009. Companies suffered declining profits, which they made up for by adding luggage, food and drink surcharges. But British budget airline Ryanair went a step further by announcing plans to charge people to use the bathroom. The carrier said it would install credit-card readers and charge £1 (about $1.65) to use the loo. But that's not all: the company also said it plans to remove two of the three bathrooms on each aircraft. "We are flying aircraft on an average flight time of one hour around Europe," Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary told the Guardian. "What the hell do we need three toilets for?" Ryanair's pay-per-potty scheme hasn't yet materialized; officials estimate it will be at least two years before they have removed and reconfigured the airplane bathrooms. Meanwhile, Japan's All Nippon Airways took a simpler approach by asking passengers to go to the bathroom before boarding in order to weigh less, so the plane would use less fuel.

The fictional Rebecca Rubin was a new 18-in. American Girl doll designed to be a 1914-era Jewish-Russian immigrant living on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The real Rebecca Rubin is an arsonist wanted by the FBI. She goes by the nickname Little Missy (which, ironically, sounds like a doll's name) and is wanted for a series of Oregon fires dating back to at least 1997. It seems the wholesome American Girl company accidentally named one of its historical-themed children's dolls after a fugitive whom authorities consider armed and dangerous. The company discovered the unfortunate coincidence only after it was pointed out in the May issue of Heeb magazine. A few months later, the doll manufacturer was back in the news with Gwen Thompson, a Great Depression–themed doll who, according to her backstory, is homeless. Her retail price: $95.

Chicago resident James Andrews opened a prison-themed hot-dog stand in the city's West Side neighborhood and staffed it entirely with ex-cons. With the slogan "Food so good, it's criminal," Felony Franks offers patrons a bleak cinderblock storefront and a list of fake Miranda rights ("You have the right to remain hungry"). But not everyone wanted to eat prison food, it seemed. A Chicago alderman refused to let Andrews hang a sign outside his restaurant, and the neighborhood association fought to eliminate the eatery altogether. Such outrage surprised many locals. "There's gunfire every other day and you never hear anything about that," said Kevin Jones, a former crack dealer turned Felony Franks employee. "But all of a sudden there's all this hoopla about a hot-dog stand?"

Sad News in Wrestling: "Dr. Death" Steve Williams Passes Away

Steve "Dr. Death" Williams lost his battle with throat cancer on December 29, as he passed away at the age of 49. The cancer came back this year and his health had worsened in the last few months.
Williams was considered one of the top wrestlers in the world during the late 80s and early 90s. He formed two of the world's best tag teams with the late Terry Gordy and with Ted DiBiase Sr., as well as a notable team with current WWE Vice President of Talent Relations John Laurinaitis. He was in particular a major star in the 90s for All Japan Pro Wrestling. He was recruited into pro wrestling by Bill Watts and was the 1982 Rookie of the Year. Watts discovered him at the University of Oklahoma, where he was a star lineman on the football team and a four-time All-American heavyweight wrestler. Many of his peers in wrestling over the years had believed if he had not played college football and concentrated on wrestling, that he would have been a strong candidate for an Olympic gold medal in 1984 or 1988.
Williams died at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver as a result of the throat cancer.

News From Outside the Bubble

In the northern German town of Reinfield the police got a surprise when they pulled over an excavator driving down a city street yesterday. The driver immediately pulled over and excited the vehicle he even admitted he did not have a drivers licence. The licence thing was obvious due to the driver being a seven year old boy. When asked why he was driving the 11.5 foot tall machine the boy stated that his dad had complained about road conditions so he, the boy, used the machine to clear the road. In fact the young man was on his way back to his parents place of business to park the excavator when he was stopped. The police collected the keys and returned them and the boy home.

A Sad And Tremendous Loss: Goodbye to A Friend

This news really hit me hard yesterday. My close and personal friend Edison Soto (Dj of radio Program El Museo Del Rock) died yesterday. It is extremely sad to see him go and the way he went was so unjust. I was Edison's friend for the last 17 years. He was the very first person I met when I arrived in Ecuador. He taught me so much as to how to live here. He taught me the world of his music genres. His show, El Museo del Rock was one of a kind here in Ecuador. The only radio show that played the obscure classic rock genres. His shoes will be hard to fill if there is anyone out there who will. I know he is in a better place and I know he is arm in arm with all the late great rock stars who have passed away. This Sunday, December 20th would have been his 47th birthday. If you get a chance please tune in this Sunday from 5pm to 7pm (his time block: Ecuadorian time) for a special tribute show. All the djs including myself will be hosting his show with some memories and will be playing some the music that made his show very respectable. Tune in at www.lametro.com.ec

Gum Is Bad For You

A young man studying chemistry at the Ukraine Polytechnic Institute made a costly mistake. He was studying in his room at his parents house when they heard a loud popping sound. Upon checking they found him dead, the bottom of his jaw blown off. It seems the student was in the habit of dipping his chewing gum in citric acid. That would have been fine, except there were packets of both citric acid and an unidentified explosive present. Apparently he dipped his gum in the wrong one. Ouch!!

Christmas is Coming!!!!!

Santa Claus

The origin of Santa Claus begins in the 4th century with Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, an area in present day Turkey. By all accounts St. Nicholas was a generous man, particularly devoted to children. After his death around 340 A.D. he was buried in Myra, but in 1087 Italian sailors purportedly stole his remains and removed them to Bari, Italy, greatly increasing St. Nicholas' popularity throughout Europe.

His kindness and reputation for generosity gave rise to claims he that he could perform miracles and devotion to him increased. St. Nicholas became the patron saint of Russia, where he was known by his red cape, flowing white beard, and bishop's mitre.

In Greece, he is the patron saint of sailors, in France he was the patron of lawyers, and in Belgium the patron of children and travellers. Thousands of churches across Europe were dedicated to him and some time around the 12th century an official church holiday was created in his honor. The Feast of St. Nicholas was celebrated December 6 and the day was marked by gift-giving and charity.

After the Reformation, European followers of St. Nicholas dwindled, but the legend was kept alive in Holland where the Dutch spelling of his name Sint Nikolaas was eventually transformed to Sinterklaas. Dutch children would leave their wooden shoes by the fireplace, and Sinterklaas would reward good children by placing treats in their shoes. Dutch colonists brought brought this tradition with them to America in the 17th century and here the Anglican name of Santa Claus emerged.

In 1822 Clement C. Moore composed the poem A Visit From Saint Nicholas, published as The Night Before Christmas as a gift for his children. In it, he portrays Santa Claus:

He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly,
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

Other countries feature different gift-bearers for the Christmas or Advent season: La Befana in Italy ~ The Three Kings in Spain, Puerto Rico, and Mexico ~ Christkindl or the Christ Child in Switzerland and Austria ~ Father Christmas in England ~ and Pere Noël, Father Christmas or the Christ Child in France. Still, the figure of Santa Claus as a jolly, benevolent, plump man in a red suit described in Moore's poem remains with us today and is recognized by children and adults alike around the world.

A group of civic activists will start running L.A. They'll peddle merchandise, too, but not the T-shirt originally proposed, where the promoters would pay kids to blast the tourists with water pistols and then sell them shirts that read "I Got Shot in South-Central."

Christmas is Coming!!!!!

The history of Christmas Carols

The explanation of the term, “Christmas carol”, originates from England. According to this English story, a young girl named Carol got lost in the streets of London on a cold winter night. In an attempt to find her, her friends went from house to house similar to the way we do during Christmas. After this episode, the term “Christmas carol” became widespread.

The more pragmatic explanation is that the word, “carol”, comes from the Greek dance, “Choraulein”, which is accompanied by flutes. Later, the Frenchmen replaced the flutes with singing and named it, “caroller”, which means, “to dance around in a circle”.

The tradition of singing carols can be traced back to the monk, St. Francis of Assisi. He introduced the singing of carols in church ceremonies. Today, each country has its own traditions in connection with Christmas carols. In many places, people walk from house to house and sing at Xmas time; in other places, Christmas carols are sung in church.
